Dawn Grace met Joe Hansen last week, the man who is alive today because he now has her son Calen.s heart after his tragic death in 2012.
It was the first time they have met after Mrs Grace, from Kentucky, initially struggled to deal with the heartache of losing Calen, who would have been 18 this year.
Calen was 14 years old when he and two friends came home to his house after a school dance and went into the garage to lift weights.
The teenager got his older brother handgun out, which he knew to be broken, and started to mock-fire the pistol.
He pulled the trigger twice before putting the gun to his head, pulling it a third time, and killing himself accidentally when the gun unexpectedly went off.
Heartbroken Mrs Grace was initially furious when she was asked to donate but says she later changed her mind after seeing her son in a vision.
She said: "When they first asked us to donate i thought they were crazy so i went home and sat in the recliner that he always sat in and came to me and said mama, what would i do, this is not about you, what would i do, and i got on the phone and i told them i would because that's who Calen was."
Mrs Grace added: "If he knew he would save a life he would do it, no questions asked.
"I think we made a great decision and he's looking down on us and he's proud that his mama knew who he was."
Mr Hansen later urged others to donate, saying: "I just want to tell everybody that this could happen to you, everyone needs to donate.
"Your child or you might need help from a total stranger, you just never know, but it is the right thing to do."
